Our rail network is a part of the backbone of America's economic growth, seamlessly connecting communities and businesses across the country. Rail is not only the safest, most efficient, and environmentally sustainable method of transporting goods over land, it is also an integral part of the communities and economies in the 22 states in which we operate.

We are dedicated to supporting each of the communities where we live and operate. We regularly engage with local officials and residents by offering collaborative initiatives to keep those cities and towns safe and thriving.

Everything we do is built on trust. Doing the right thing is the cornerstone of our relationships with the communities in which we proudly serve, and we are steadfast in our commitment to always do right by them.

Safety in Our Communities

At Norfolk Southern, we are a driving force behind the growth and prosperity of towns and cities across the eastern United States. Our commitment to building strong, thriving communities is at the heart of everything we do.

That is why we've opened a brand new First Responder Training Center in East Palestine, Ohio to provide free training for first responders from Ohio, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and the greater region. It's an extension of our Operation Awareness and Response (OAR) program, which trains 5,000 first responders annually across 22 states.

We launched OAR in 2015 to educate communities about the economic importance of the safe movement of hazardous materials by rail, and to connect first responders with training resources.

Our President and CEO Alan Shaw said it best, "Norfolk Southern is committed to setting the gold standard for safety in the rail industry. First responders are heroes, and we aim to ensure they have the training and expertise to do their jobs safely."

Corporate Giving and Community Engagement

Great things happen when we pull together. In 2023, we established two new grant programs focused on safety and communities.

The Safety First Grant supports safety organizations and initiatives by helping first responders better prepare for and prevent emergencies.

The Thriving Communities Grant promotes economic opportunity, supports vibrant community life, and provides equal access to basic necessities across our network. Each grant goes to nonprofit organizations working to build a strong and resilient foundation for long-term prosperity.
